IOM: More than half of Afghans depend on humanitarian aid

Almost all Afghans have been pushed into poverty since August 2021, and the country has been at risk of systemic collapse, the IOM said. The main causes of this humanitarian disaster include rising food prices, severe malnutrition, limited livelihood opportunities, and conflict-induced displacement and complex protection needs, including the need for emergency accommodation, referrals and family reunification.

People living in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan are in desperate need of emergency assistance. The delivery of essential services has been severely affected and development plans have been suspended. Ongoing economic and environmental shocks have led to sharp declines in incomes, reduced remittance flows, and soaring prices of food and other commodities.

In this complex situation, IOM continues to work to meet humanitarian needs and reduce protection risks for people on the move, while working to mitigate the impact of ongoing and emerging crises, such as the devastating earthquake in June this year

Over the past 12 months, the International Organization for Migration has assisted more than 1.3 million Afghans through food distributions, temporary shelter, water, sanitation, health services and other necessities. Among them, housing supply has expanded substantially, and almost half of the Afghans in need have been helped. Health care services have also expanded from four provinces by August 2021 to 13 provinces by August 2022, providing life-saving services to more than 410,000 people.

A year after the crisis began, IOM said only 34 percent of the funding needed for the agency's Comprehensive Plan of Action for Afghanistan and its Neighbors was in place, with most of the funding focused on the most basic humanitarian needs.

Given the deteriorating living conditions caused by the rising cost of living, the impact of the war in Ukraine on food and fuel prices, a sharp rise in unemployment and the shocks and disasters caused by climate change, IOM is seeking more funding for recovery programmes in Afghanistan. Progress made in supporting the Afghan people must be expanded in the coming months and ahead of the coming winter, the agency said
